Portrait Painting In Oil (Alla Prima)

This workshop is designed for anyone wanting to learn portraiture in a fun and creatively nurturing environment. Students will learn how to break down the face into simple shapes, learn to work with values (light to dark) to create a believable 3-dimensional head, learn to deal with edges to provide the proper texture or gradation of light and mix colors from a simple palette of 8 paint tubes to produce any color imaginable. The instructor will create a portrait from a live female model the morning of the first day while students watch and ask questions. Students will work from a static, monochromatic plaster model the afternoon of the first day while the instructor guides each student by teaching the importance of drawing, value, edges and color (monochromatic). The second day, students will work from a live female model while the instructor guides each student on how to adapt the knowledge gained from the plaster model to that of the live model. The third day will be a continuation of day two where students will be guided through the finishing stages of a head and shoulders portrait in the alla prima style of painting. The last hour and a half will be devoted to a critique session given by the instructor to each student so that students will be aware of how to continue improving the skills they’ve learned during the workshop. Wine and cheese along with simple hors d’ oeuvres will be served as refreshment.
