Chinese painting is an ancient art based on calligraphy strokes. The brush is held like a baton allowing for more flexibility. Most strokes are accomplished with the movement coming from the shoulder. This requires that the mind and body work as one thus quieting the mind and resulting in an active meditation.
There are four basic studies in Chinese painting called ‘The Four Gentlemen’, bamboo, plum, orchid and chrysanthemum. These form the foundation for all of Chinese paintings.
Drawing isn’t necessary. Strokes, patterns and techniques are learned giving you the tools to be creative. If you are a beginner, you can feel confident that with effort, you will be able to express yourself creatively.
If you are accomplished in another discipline, Chinese painting can free up your art.
